Lesson 16 drill — Past Simple vs Past Continuous — the storytelling pair
Travel stories live and die on these two tenses. PAST CONTINUOUS (was/were + -ing) sets the SCENE — the longer background action: 'We were walking along the beach…' PAST SIMPLE then drops in the EVENT that interrupts it: '…when a huge wave knocked us over.' Combine them with WHEN, WHILE, AS: 'While I was checking in, my phone rang.' 'As we were taking off, the lights flickered.' That contrast is what makes a story sound cinematic instead of flat.
